The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis
Target Grade Level: 5-8
Middle school students have the ability to work with technology to promote a book. Using iMovie or Cute Cut, students can create a book trailer that can be posted to the school library webpage, and shown to 5th grade classes who will be reading the book for summer reading. Additionally, the best projects can be selected and sent out to parents via weekly newsletters. This promotes the library and students' technology skills with parents and the community.

Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos
Target Grade Level: 5-8
Jack Gantos is an interesting author who has a troubled past with reading. He was a "slow reader" in early elementary school. His story can be inspiring to those students who feel that they are not the best readers. An author's webquest about Jack Gantos is a great connection to this autobiographical novel. After completing the author webquest, information about Jack Gantos and his books can be displayed in the library for all to see.

I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
Target Grade Level: k-3
Young children love puppets, using the iPads, and creating their own stories. Using the iPad app Puppet Pals, students can retell the story of Bear and his friends using puppets that they create and film. A sequel could also be filmed. This would create excitement about the story, as the children would love to see what they've created featured on the school library webpage and promoted in the monthly library newsletter. It would be motivational to other students who have not read the book to check it out and compare the book to the video.

The Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz
Target Grade Level: K-3
Young students will enjoy connecting this book to other stories about the three little pigs. A bulletin board display can be created by using many different Three Little Pig book jackets (or images of) such as: The Three Little Javelinas by Susan Lowell, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka, The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas. An anchor chart about the elements of fractured fairy tales would be displayed with the book jackets. During library time, Three Little Pig centers could be out for students to explore retelling the story or creating their own version - finger puppets, a felt board set, a Play-doh three little pigs set, and a puzzle. Many are pictured below. On YouTube, students can watch the Fractured Fairy Tales episode of The Three Little Pigs to compare/contrast it with other versions of the story. Seeing many different versions of the same story will cause students to be interested in different versions of fairy tales. Photos from the centers/activities can be sent to parents, along with their invitation to The Three Piggie Opera - an annual St. Edward School kindergarten tradition.
